NFT - Non Fungible Tokens Are The New Fun Toys!

Ya heard? Non Fungible Tokens aka NFT are here to stay - this is what at least some people say.
I recently shopped my very first one from the gifted artist Liminal Architecture -
a surreal dream pool with a synthwave-ish aesthetic...I guess a few posts ago I mentioned that I dream of pools a lot, didn't I? Anhyow...now you know.

Oh and btw: I also minted my own NFT - shot in my secret garden - on the Foundation.app

Music

Au Revoir

Why I've stopped making music:
- Not because of COVID-19
- Not because of a lack of INSPIRATION
...
- But because I found CALM.

Calm in a sense that:
There are so many BRILLIANT artists out there! Their musical expression of emotions is so on point with ...
- what I feel
- with what gives me goosebumps
- with what makes me cry, run, smile and fight
...I identify 100% with their sound.

Amongst other: LORN, DOLOR, and I used to do so: DEPECHE MODE.

And since their sound floats my point SO MUCH I can have faith into their tunes.

I know that any sort of funny emotion in my stupid little head will be audio-covered by my music heroes.

And that's why I can let go.
At least for a while.

All my audio "heritage" will remain available via Bandcamp, via this site and partially on Spotify, too. But I no longer worry about being heard. About expressing myself through the means of music. I've found temporary peace in the fact that I feel home in so many other artists sounds. There's nothing left to say for me. For now.

Instead, I'll go back where I come from:
I come from a time when listening to tunes was pure joy.
No more wondering how they got the low-end so fat, the snare so tight (btw, your snare sounds like trash) and the pads so ethereal. Funk that! I'm quite sure I'll return to making music one day. When I feel the urge to do so.

Until then, I will celebrate AND share with you the music that I like most. I'll do so by capturing moments of every day life and fix those shots up with music that pulls my triggers. And you can see the results on Instagram and TikTok

Also, I'll keep you posted here. This site will remain a vital part of my personal brand's communication. BTW: Join me on LinkedIn!

Also, make sure you check out my bros from www.lichtsignale.de - they'll become a vital part of my life in 2021. Designer Simon Malz and Content Producer Samuel Kümmel have been with me since forever - and they will continue to do so. I'm glad to have my bros at my side.

A Sunday Stroll

Hello world, please welcome "A Sunday Stroll" - my first release since...2018. A Sunday Stroll - with it's field-recordings from various Berlin streets and parks...is my hommage to this beautiful urban moloch of a city. A melange made from melancholy of days gone by ... joy because of the nice life I can live - and the sun that's setting in front of me ... letting the houses cast shadows onto everyone and everything around them. This is my perfect Sunday Stroll. Release day: March, 20th 2020 and available via the usual streaming services

An evergreen event: Although (personally) struggling with their latest tunes, I'm still on fire when it comes to playing Depeche Mode in a SPA: As usual: This evening revolves around the ballads, instrumentals, bare versions and b-sides! Attendance for Black Swarmers is highly recommended. Therefore: Jump into your (black) swimming trunks and float by.

From time to time, Brandon - an (still) uknown voice-over star - drops by to record some material for a (still) top secret project. What you can see here is a basic, but absolutely sufficient setup for very good sounding vocals recordings: A Shure SM7B - in an acoustically traeated room (for heaven's sake DO NOT RECORD IN A VOCAL BOOTH!). We've started in August and probably continue till December 2019. All recordings then go through a vocal plugin chain: Takin' away any low-rumble, boosting the mids, a bit of de-essing, some gentle compression - et voilà: Your voice is good to go.

The Full STOP!

It just had to happen - music production came to a complete, full stop - and it all started with some heavy rainfall. Here's the background information: The studio is situated under a rooftop-terrace. A late-summer thunderstorm with some heavy, heavy rainfall was strong enough to flood the terrace - with water eventually dripping through my ceiling. "Dripping" for the first few moments, because seconds later, water was not just dripping - it came down like a waterfall. How do I know? Well, luckily, I was on site. I managed to evacuate all keyboards and almost all speakers. The sub got covered in a wallpaper-mud-mixture - and so did the entire desk. Long story short: it took some whopping two months to actually dry all walls, followed by a renovation, followed by a complete re-setting up of the entire studio. Lovely.

Kraftwerk For The Masses

Kantine am Berghain

Another brainchild revolving around my favorite bands: Kraftwerk For The Masses - a mashed up title referring to - obviously Kraftwerk and to DM's album "Music For The Masses". The idea for this event is more than 10 years old and KFTM was the very ever first concept that I turned into an actual event. It took place in the (now abandoned) techno club "U60311" in Frankfurt / Main in 2008. And although it's 2019 by now...the idea of having both my fav bands working together, later transitioning into Synth and dark Techno...well: To me, it's a match. And as far as I can see, I'm not alone - but we'll see how things turn out. Feel inivted! Kantine am Berghain on Saturday, July 27th!
Also, let me say something on the design: My dear friend Simon Malz from "Lichtsignale" developed this - also awfully long ago. But: The design is timeless, just like the music we celebrate. The type, color and the core visual elements spot on translate the party's spirit into a visual language: Strength, tension and contrast. Thank you, Simon!

Q3 Ambientfest Edition 2019
12 04 2019

Do you know what a boutique music festival is? No? Well, wonder no more! A boutique music festival is a passionately hosted event with hand-picked artists that - in this case - are all into classical contemporary & experimental music. The event organizers Ceeys (artists themselves) started Q3Ambientfest in 2017 and I DJed there since 2018. A thing that I realized this year: Q3Ambientfest gives us (the artists) a feeling of being at home. This is a rare phenomenon. To my mind, this mostly has to do with the intimate setting, the passionate, interested audience and the amazing crew that supports the founders. My key-takeaway: I got to know new, amazing artists and re-met familiar faces. Just to name a few: Diane Barbé's soundscapes were awesome, Poppy Ackroyd's music: Highly moving. And so were the tunes made by Simeon Walker, Jakob Lindhagen (when was the last time you saw someone playing a SAW?) & Vargkvint as well as Kinbrae with their longing trumpet X electronica. Naming the entire line-up would be too much, but rest assured: It was a wonderful selection of tension and release! And for my part: I set musical counterpoints and prepared the ambience in between the acts. Feel free to join this Spotify Playlist and re-experience the touching electronics played.

My DJ-Set "Les Savants" (=> The knowing ones): A one hour trip featuring only the best French music producers. The French station "Radio FG" Paris is gonna air it end of March - or you simply listen to it on Mixcloud where it went kinda "viral" for my standards.
Shout out to Rik from Solar Bar for making this possible. About a week earlier, the set is also gonna be played by Radio FG chic on Sunday, 18th from 11pm on.

Music

Track: Firepond

Certainly one of those tracks that started with a strong idea. But that that strong idea then got watered down in the course of the mix. "But...why?" you might ask? Well, because it became too fancy. I simply f***** it up. "But ... why?" Because it denied what it was: A blunt, loud and direct attack that only can be consumed in a short period of time. So I boiled things down again ... and this is how "Firepond" become my so far shortest and most aggressive tune. I'm happy to repeat myself here: My tunes are like a swinging pendulum: Moving from Easy Listening and Electronica to Industrial and Techno ... and back.
As usual, you can download Firepond for free at Bandcamp or you simply stream it via Spotify.

Catching a ship long gone

I met Mads aka Monolog about a year ago. He played at my "Traurig Und Untanzbar" Event. Weeks after the show we had a chat about how he had created his very unique style of music. We browsed through his gear, pondered on memories where and why he got this or that piece of hardware. And eventually, he said something that I literally had to let sink in. The importance was not just rooted in the content of his statement, but also in the WAY he said the following:
"If you wanna get signed by a label, you might feel urged to match that label's sound. You even might be expanding the sound they currently stand for. And you might think that this is the way to get signed. Be like what they represent, but sound a little different.
But in reality, what you're hearing right now (and what is making you think the label is looking for) is nothing but a reverb, a delayed reality of what WAS what they stood for long ago!
Sounding alike or similar to a current release is like tryin' to catch a ship that not just has left the harbor. It's even worse than that: The ship you wanted to catch has by now become nothing more than a tiny dot at the horizon. It's long gone and it's gone for good.
And all that there's left are stories(=> tracks) of the discoveries others made whilst being on this boat. But these stories won't be yours."

Personally, I feel this is very right. And this makes me sad on the one hand - cuz I may have wanted to be with this or that label/ship/younameit SO badly.
But on the other hand: Why don't I build my own ship and go onto my own journey?
Leaving aside the pro and cons of being signed to a label, my very personal opinion on this is:
Be inspired by artists you like but don't be similar. Be different, get used to being rejected plenty of times. Eventually (and this is not a guarantee!) you might succeed.
But first and foremost: Expand your horizon - for example start listening to the tunes your artist-heroes listened to when they were yound. See what inspired them.
Or listen to tunes that you don't like at all.
Let all that sink in and come up with your reaction to all the input.
Your reaction.
Not the reaction you think that might suit a label's taste.

Cleaning With Tootbrushes

In early 2018 I reached out to my most important audio-engineering-mentor: Marc Mozart (highly recommend reading his mixing-bible "Your Mix Sucks"). In my mail, I was bluntly honest about a topic that I was/am still struggeling with. Apart from MAKING and then DISTRIBUTING music, how can I actually get HEARD? Sure, I DJ, play events, etc - but I felt there's more that could be done. Marc's answer was straight, simple and very kind: "You need to become a brand - And I'll help you with that!" And so I went and spent some time with him and his crew. They made me clean the studio-floor with a toothbrush and then shared all their secrets with me!
The secret is - *DRUMROLL* - There is no secret! Just document and share your process of actually becoming a pro audio engineer, DJ and eventmanager.
And this is what I'm gonna do from now on. And although his advice sounds somewhat obviously, I invite you to join me on my journey of gettin there - cuz it ain't gonna be easy. Instead it's gonna be a shotload of work and I can hardly wait to get things started!

Event Creation: Traurig Und Untanzbar

My mind never stops spinning. If it's not about making music or DJing, I ponder on event concepts. The latest edition to this restlessness was "Traurig Und Untanzbar" - one of the biggest events I've created so far. Four awesome live-acts, taking the audience on a trip from melancholia to madness in just four live-concerts. Eric Carl kicked things off with his Dronescapes and touching visuals. Field Rotation then took over, leading us into the fields of Neo Classical Music. Subheim showcased what true Dark Ambient Music is: Soundscapes that go under your skin - spiced up with tensed percussion. Last but not least, Monolog // Mads Lindgren lit his explosives. Since I hosted the event, I decided not to DJ. I was just there and enjoyed the show.

Traurig Und Untanzbar Vol.2 will take place on Sept. 14th, 2018.
Traurig Und Untanzbar Vol. 3 is currently being planned.

Event Creation: ∆ - The DELTA Tunes

The term "∆-Tunes" (say: DELTA-Tunes) perfectly describes the music I make and love to listen to: It is the difference between what you're wishing for vs. what you get. Mathematically spoken, the ∆ (say: DELTA) was a thing that has always inspired me the most. Happiness and fulfillment have never been sources of creativity to me. Instead, failing (better and quicker) and doubts have always been the path for growth and progress. This is why I decided to celebrate this state of unrest by focusing on music that perfectly depicts and triggers what it means to feel: ∆.

Bye Bye, Music Mindmap

To make good music, follow two simple rules. One: Know the rules. Two: Break the rules. On this day, I took down my gigantic mindmap full of music production know-how (see rule 1) that covered most of the walls in my studio. But before I did so, I had a Gin Tonic and sprayed my kind-a credo over all the map.

Music

Track: Industrial et Tendresse

Contradiction causes tension. And so does this track: It unfolds into an aggressive but tender vortex of melodies and rhythm. You can download the track for free via Bandcamp. Of course, you'll also find it on Spotify.

Event Creation: Float With Depeche Mode

I make music, but I also make events. The idea for "Float With Depeche Mode" was born in late 2016 and arised from my desire to listen to Depeche Mode's B-Sides, rares and lives all night long in an environment that fits the less dancefloor-like music. The nice people from Liquidrom Berlin - a thermal bath and my favorite place to drop these tunes - said "yes".

The pitch goes like this: "Float with Depeche Mode" Ein Abend im Liquidrom gehört ganz den Balladen, Instrumentals, Bare Versions und B-Sides unserer Helden Martin L. Gore, Dave Gahan und Andy Fletcher. Ever since this very first "Float With Depeche Mode", the event returns every ten (or so) weeks. To find more about the next event, check out the event-section for upcoming events.

Liquidrom Berlin

The very first edition of the "Float With Depeche Mode". This kick-off event happened to become an event series, bringing joy to the Black Swarm Berlin and to me, the DJ.

Music

Track: Chambre 24

A rather joyful, almost trancy tune, innit? As usual, I invite you to get your free Bandcamp download via or listen to it on repeat via Spotify below :).

Torstrassenfestival @ Hotel ULTRA

The Hotel ULTRA is more than just a hotel. In fact, it's not even a hotel. It's a secret place full of joy and good music from the 80ies - especially Synth & Italo.

A dear friend of mine said "Ja, ich will". And when she asked me to take care of the music, I said "Ja, ich will", too.

Music

Track: Gin Tonic

I love Gin Tonic - and Gin Tonic loves me. So we made a tune. Later, the fine guys from Trndmsk joined us and we had a chat about the floorstarter-track - check out the interview-section. Get your free version of Gin Tonic here.

Unbaking the cake - track deconstruction as a mean for musical insights

Sharing is caring - this is my credo. And since I gained a shitload of insights by deconstructing other artist's tracks, I decided to share my know-how with the superb Noisy Academy Berlin audience. My songwriting still benefits from this technique up until today - if you're interested in learning it, feel free to contact me: I'm quite a good teach.

Prince Charles Berlin

Tony dropping my Track "Gin Tonic" in one of his CDR-Sets at Prince Charles. Also, he did a talk over during the track...so if you want to listen to it in full: Check out the free track download in the music-section.

Music

Track: I Score

Though the mainstream's love for Synth-Pop has ended decades ago, I still enjoy making those tunes. This one makes quite a good score for an 80’s crime series, I feel.

Station Berlin

Sven Marquardt, that grim looking Berghain Bouncer, gives photography lessons. This event showcased the pictures made by his students - I framed the picutres with audio. Also, I bumped into one of my favorite artists and personal heroes: Rummelsnuff.

Music

Track: Interlude

The track's title pretty much says it all: A swift but beautiful idea.

Music

Track: Herrenhaus Eisenstein

A tune back from my sandbox-days. It was created in a time where I enjoyed experimenting instead of writing in dedicated music genres.
